Sir Garfield Sobers mingled and chatted with over 100 British guests of the SeaBreeze hotel who are in Barbados for cricket.
More than 100 lucky English visitors are still cherishing the opportunity they got to meet and greet Sir Garfield Sobers on Thursday night, as the global cricket legend was hosted during a special function at the SeaBreeze Hotel .
The visitors, all guests of the southcoast all-inclusive family resort and currently in Barbados for the third test match – West Indies vs England – at Kensington Oval, enjoyed the event and many also used the occasion to jog the memory of the island’s only living National Hero, taking him back to exciting moments in his stellar cricketing career.
Asked about some of his fondest memories on the playing field, the 78 year-old former Barbados and West Indies captain disclosed that the most exciting series he ever played was the 1960-61 series against Australia in Australia.
West Indies were captained by Sir Frank Worrell during that five-tests series and Australia by the late Richie Benaud, who both encouraged their players to play attacking cricket.

Personally autographed photos of global cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers were in high demand during a special reception at the SeaBreeze hotel.
That series featured the famous tied test at Brisbane in December 1960, when Sir Garry scored 132, and West Indies narrowly lost the series 2-1.
“I have very fond memories of Richie Benaud and that series for me is the most exciting series that I ever played in. There was some good cricket from both sides and every match went to an exciting finish,” he said.
Sir Garry also told his audience that the conditions in England , when he visited there on his first tour in 1957, provided a great learning curve in his illustrious career and England had produced some great players over the years.
He also said that it was extremely difficult to compare today’s players with those of yesteryear as the game had changed dramatically since his playing days.
General Manager of the SeaBreeze Hotel, Faye Best said they were happy to host the living legend at the property and equally happy that their guests fully enjoyed the occasion.
Said Best: ” We are always seeking ways to enhance the SeaBreeze experience for our guests and provide lasting memories of Barbados and our hotel as their best ever holiday experience.”
