Byron Jackman, seen here at an event last year, passed away at his home this morning.

The Transport Board and the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) have been thrown into mourning today with the sudden death of longstanding employee and union executive member Byron Jackman.

Jackman, who was a supervisor in the Operations Department and held various positions with the BWU, collapsed and died at his home this morning.

He was 58.

Marketing and Communications Manager with the Board, Lynda Holder told Barbados TODAY that Jackman worked just last night and his death came as a shock.

We have had to bring in counsellors to speak to the staff. They are not dealing with this well . . . Byron was a stalwart of the Board having been an employee since 1976. He was a strong advocate for employee rights and sat on the local delegation for a number of years in various positions, offering words of advice to all who needed it,” she said in a statement.

Byron will be sorely missed. The staff and management of the Transport Board wish to express condolences to [his] family on his passing.”

Jackman was also president of the Public Transport Cooperative Credit Union Limited.
