Shaquille Omar Beckles, a Christ Church teenager, was given four months to come up with $2,500 to pay a fine for cultivating a marijuana plant at his home.
The alternative which Magistrate Christopher Birch gave the 19 year old St Patricks resident was nine months’ imprisonment at HMP Dodds.
Beckles also received an 18 months prison sentence for possession of the cannabis but it was suspended for three years.
Outlining the case, police prosecutor, Sergeant Azel Skeete, told the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court that police executed a warrant at Beckles’ home and found a cannabis plant in a bucket in his yard.
“This is my weed tree in the bucket that I plant to get some money,” Beckles reportedly told the police officers.
