Local children’s retail store Krackerjack Kidz suffered minor damage after fire broke out at the Cane Wood, St Michael branch this evening.

The only employee present at the scene, Barbara Rice, told Barbados TODAY she was on the phone with store owner Simone Gittens when she noticed something was amiss.

“I look up in the ceiling, it was an electrical thing . . . she tell me turn off the breakers and by the time I look around it was just a gush . . . so I just take my handbag and get out the building” Rice said.

Station Officer Mervin Mayers reported that the fire was quickly extinguished, however “one or two parts of the stock [were] damaged by fire, otherwise it’s soot and water”.

The top floor of the two-storey building also suffered from soot damage.

Store owner Gittens added that a majority of the damage was located at the back of the building where the fire started.

“The black smoke has polluted everything … like all the clothing, the entire baby products, all of that will have to be claimed for because the smoke damage would have been too much,” Griffith said.

However she noted that on the positive side, “it’s a good time because Christmas stock has not come in as yet”.

Krackerjack Kidz Cane Wood branch has been closed temporarily because of the fire, however the Limegrove store remains open for business.
