Loud cheers rang out in Hillaby, St Andrew, on Saturday morning as William Theophilus Allder became Barbados’ newest centenarian.
Celebrating at his home, Allder, who is an avid harmonica player, spoke of the importance of being a single father to his children Angela, Phillip, Franklin, Lillian, Heather and Harriett, following the death of his first wife in 1976.
The retired tailor left his life in the rural community and moved to Toronto, Canada, for 20 years, where he later remarried and became a stepfather to Andrew and Carl.
He also has 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Phillip, who along with the majority of the family came in from Canada for the celebrations, spoke on how hardworking his father was during their childhood and said in spite of this, he still continued to take the time to show love and care for each of them.
Allder’s firstborn, Angela Edey, said she felt “wonderful, honoured and blessed” that her father has reached the significant milestone, wishing him many more years to come.
President Dame Sandra Mason paid a virtual visit to the celebrations via Zoom and congratulated Allder and wished him a very special birthday. (JB)
