CXC TO CHANGE UP ASSESSMENT METHODS AMID RISE IN CHATBOT USE

By Jenique Belgrave

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) will be adjusting its exam assessment in light of the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms like Chat GPT.
Chat GPT, which can generate responses to questions, summarise texts, and write stories, poems, and essays, is becoming popular among students globally.
“We understand that ChatGPT is here with us, it is here to stay and we will therefore make the necessary adjustments to our assessment procedures to accommodate that,” said Manager of the Research, Insights and Product Innovation Department at the CXC, Dr Margaret Niles on Tuesday.
She added that both CXC and teachers will have to increase their vigilance when marking work, especially School Based Assessments (SBAs).
“I do take the point that there’s so much external input into the SBA by the student that there’s quite the ease of using Chat GPT to produce a finished product,” said Niles, a panellist at the University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor’s Forum on Artificial Information: A Blessing or a Curse for Higher Education?.
“We do accept that there is a difference in the way that we will approach assessment, but there will also need to be a difference in the way that we approach teaching as well.
“But I think if we focus then on inculcating the soft skills, the ethical values, the understanding of what is right and wrong in terms of academic integrity, then we will go a long way, not only in preparing them to pass our exams or matriculate into university but they can take those skills into their life after school,” she added.
Niles said she was against banning or blocking the chatbot from educational institutions. Instead, she said, it should be integrated into the curriculum.
“We do understand that we now have to focus a lot on authentic assessment and that our stakeholders, especially our teachers, will need now to be very vigilant. And as we develop the strategies and policies as we go through, that will support the integration of Chat GPT across our syllabi and our curriculum,” the CXC official added.
