A teenager who returned to court today to see whether he would be granted bail, got his wish.
However, acting Magistrate Alliston Seale did not grant Shaquille O’Neal Cumberbatch $20 000 bail without a stern warning.
The accused, of #72 Golden Rock, Pinelands, St Michael, is charged with four counts of robbery and one of theft. He appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.
After being on remand for some time, bail was granted today.
In interviewing his two sureties, Seale felt disturbed by the fact that Cumberbatch had so many charges already and was only 19 years old.
When asked why he was already in so much trouble with the law, his aunt replied that she did not know why.
“Have you ever stood as a surety for anybody before?” asked Seale.
“Yes . . . my son,” the woman said.
“So what is he (the accused) to you?”
“My nephew.”
“You mean you got trouble and your sister got trouble too? Whatever the two of you all doing, you all doing it wrong. The only surety you all should be signing is the one at the Student Revolving Loan Scheme.”
“ . . . and he racking up a little book here,” Seale said, referring to Cumberbatch’s several charges.
Bail was granted with two sureties and the accused told to report to Central Police Station “every single day before midday, with identification”.
The accused was also placed on a 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. curfew and told to “keep off the people streets”.
“If you breach these conditions, you will be brought back here and remanded to prison. So you could play you is a man when you leave here and stay out late; and see what happens.”
