PM SAYS DEADLINE TO REPLACE OLD ID CARD EXTENDED

By Sheria Brathwaite

Government will be extending the life of the old National Identification Card beyond the June 30 deadline.
On Thursday night, during the St Joseph edition in the second round of the Parish Speaks town hall series at the Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School, Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that the deadline would be extended due to supply chain issues.
“There will be an extension so you don’t have to worry,” she said, responding to a resident about the June deadline.
“The supplier of the cards as well is not in a position to deliver any more cards for us before the end of May or June,” Mottley said, explaining that the local stock had run out and so had the stock to the supplier from their source.
“You hear us keep talking about the disruption in the supply chain, it is real. Because of that, the Government is going to take the decision to extend [the deadline].”
Mottley said that she was also going to have a meeting with officials from the Electoral and Boundaries Commission on Friday to determine exactly how long the extension would be.
So far, about 140 000 ID cards have been distributed.
