Two women, who were nabbed by Customs officials while trying to bring drugs into the island hidden in appliances, are due to appear in court tomorrow.
Lasonja Paulette Gilkes, 37, of Grand View, St. Thomas and Nyzinga Onifa, 55, of Cane Vale Crescent, Christ Church, will appear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court and the Oistins Magistrates’ Court respectively.
Last Wednesday, Gilkes went to a freighting business to clear a freezer, which was imported. A search of the freezer by members of the Customs Enforcement Unit of the Customs Department found a quantity of cannabis hidden within the door of the freezer weighing 18.4 pounds.
Onifa was caught at the airport last Thursday after Customs searched a stove and a dryer, which were imported. A quantity of cannabis weighing 41 pounds was discovered concealed in both appliances. Further investigations led to her arrest.
Both women have been charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation.
