Attorney-at-law and Chairman of the September Third Foundation, David Comissiong, is in the process of filing lawsuits on behalf of the families of Campus Trendz fire victims, Nikkita Belgrave and Kellishaw Olivirre.
Comissiong today he said he was working on the documents and would file them between today and tomorrow in order to meet the statutory limitation period of September 3, 2013.
When contacted attorney-at-law, Douglas Trotman, who has been retained by the family of fire victim, Kelly Ann Welch, said he would be filing a lawsuit on Monday, September 2.
Fellow lawyer, Avenelle Hinkson-Forde, declined to identify the family or families who had retained her services, while colleague Vonda Pile
could not be reached for a comment. Earlier this month, Comissiong told members
of the press that the families of the six young women who perished in a Bridgetown fire were about to file a series of unlawful death suits seeking financial compensation for their loss.
The suits which seek an unspecified amount of monetary damages, will be filed against Renaldo Anderson Alleyne, who was sentenced to six life sentences after pleading guilty last year,
Jamar Dwayne Orlando Bynoe, who is in prison awaiting trial on six counts of murder, the owner of the clothing store, and the owner of the Tudor Street, Bridgetown building in which Shanna Griffith, Nikkita Belgrave, Pearl Cornelius, Tiffany Harding, Kellishaw Olivierre and Kelly Ann Welch met their deaths.
“So the lawsuits will be filed, the statutory limitation period for filing lawsuits in the case of unlawful death is three years. So the statutory limitation period would expire on September 3, this year.
“Lawsuits will be filed before then and the lawsuits will target not only the issue of the [persons] who committed the criminal act…, but also the fact that the building in which Campus Trendz Store was being carried on did not have a fire escape and that the business itself in which these young were employed was being carried on without a fire escape in place,” Comissiong added.
