While five Barbadian interns have been identified as the most outstanding medical students for July 2012 to June 2013, Dr. Jamario Skeete has emerged as the Intern of the Year.
Speaking at the award ceremony in the Boardroom of the Queen Elizabeth hospital today, Consultant Paediatrician, Dr. Clyde Cave said remarked on Skeete’s professionalism.
“[D]uring his time at the hospital, in addition to the hard work he has provided in taking care of patients in our hospital, he has shown all of the personal and professional characteristics that we consider to exemplify the best of a young doctor. So he has been selected as our intern of the year.”
It was a difficult decision in that we have several very good young doctors. “Four others: Dr. Addison St. John, Dr. Ciel Harris, Dr. Dana Forde, and Dr. Kymberly Jones have also been selected as outstanding interns in the programme for the last year.”
He explained that during the last year the students would have undergone three-months rotations in medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, pediactrics and general surgery.
“At the end of this year of internship, they are now eligible to be registered by the Medical Council of Barbados which would enable them to practise in Barbados and to pursue post-graduate specialty training,” Cave added.
He reminded Barbadians that the QEH was a busy hospital for service, but added: “[I]t is also busy for teaching and there are times like this when it is a rewarding place when we can see the quality of the people that we have been privileged to be part of their training. (NC)
