Republic Bank is keen to work with the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training to support initiatives that improve students’ proficiency in Mathematics.
So said its Marketing Officer, Communications, Sharon Howell, while presenting cheques to the winners of the Mathematics Unites Photography Challenge, which was part of the recently held International Day of Mathematics celebrations.
“As a bank, we are acutely aware of the importance of well-honed mathematical skills – it’s a requirement for many who work in our sector.
With that said, we hope to work even more closely with the Mathematics Department on initiatives, programmes and competitions that increase students’ enthusiasm for the subject as well as their proficiency in it,” Howell said.
International Day of Mathematics, also known as Pi Day, was celebrated on March 14. Barbadians joined with millions around the world to mark the occasion under the theme “Mathematics Unites”.
The photography challenge, sponsored by the Bank, was one of several local activities celebrating the day. Students were encouraged to take a picture of themselves showing their experience or interaction with something mathematical, in their own environment.
It was all smiles as Howell presented prizes to both the secondary and primary school winners. In the secondary school category, the first and third place prizes of $600 and $200 went to St. Leonard’s Boys’ Anderson Gibson and Malik Price respectively. The second-place prize of $400 went to Combermere’s Khloe Mottley.
St. Leonard’s Boys School principal, Stephen Scott, was present for the presentation to his students, along with Ron Harewood, other members of the Mathematical Department and members of Gibson’s class.
“I am proud of our students and what they were able to put together for this competition. They are outstanding examples for the rest of the student body and we look forward to more opportunities being provided by the ministry that help our students to shine,” Scott said.
In the primary school category, the $400 first place prize went to Blackman and Gollop’s Lucas Reifer, the $300 second-place prize went to Charles F. Broome’s Danielle Lovell and the third-place prize of $100 went to West Terrace’s Zaria Watson.
Noting that the bank was deeply committed to investing in schools and educational programmes, Howell said: “We are happy to support initiatives that get our students excited about learning.
We look forward to deepening our relationship with the ministry and the Mathematics Department, and learning how we can offer even greater support in the future.” (PR)
