One of the newest candidates on the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) slate is promising a revitalised St. Michael North if elected on January 19.
During the launch of the BLP’s platform last evening, political hopeful Davidson Ishmael outlined some of his plans, among them, the expansion of the natural gas network across the constituency and a renewed focus on youth development through robust sports programmes. He recalled when the Eden Lodge community from where he hailed was known for its talented sports people who used this as an avenue for development.
“The Eden Stars franchise was one that was formidable. All across Barbados, the Eden Stars footballers were top notch. We had some of the best footballers in Barbados, in fact, we had footballers who played for Barbados. We had some of the best cricketers in Barbados. We had some of the greatest people who would have played netball in Barbados so that is what I want to bring back to the community. I want to revitalize the sports programme there,” he said.
In addition, Ishmael said he wanted to establish a community centre in Reservoir Road because at present there was no sports facility to accompany the existing basketball court and playing field. While thanking former BLP MP Ronald Toppin for his 27 years of representation to the constituency, Ishmael said that he also wanted to introduce entrepreneurial and skills development programmes especially targeting youth there. According to him, this will give these young people a sense of hope.
“I want to give them hope, I want to give them tangible skills that they can employ so that they themselves can lift themselves out of their circumstances. I want to revitalise the play parks, in particular, the Grazettes play park is in need of some serious attention. We have already raised it with the relevant authorities and I am expecting and believing that we are going to continue to put pressure to get that matter addressed. We want to see the establishment of community centres and recreational spaces. We would have launched just recently a green space. . . . As you can see, I intend to be a responsive representative. I intend to be one that represents from the heart and I intend to bring you the good people of St. Michael North results,” Ishmael said. (KC)
