Feedback inherently focuses on past actions but the focus should always remain on the future, according to Jeff Smith, Founder and CEO of the Supporting Lines Institute and a certified executive coach (CEC, PCC, MCEC).
Smith took his message via webinar to his fellow chartered professional accountants during two free online webinars hosted by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada) on November 10.
“During the webinar, we took a deep dive into the three-story feedback method, which helps leaders pinpoint the source of their frustration or challenge and then communicate their feedback clearly while creating space for the other person to share their perspective,” explained Smith.
“By focusing on a better ’future story’ instead of battling over who is right, leaders can communicate their message while also strengthening – as opposed to harming – relationships.”
International CPAs at the meeting learned how to provide balanced feedback that clearly presents a less-emotional, fact-based summary of their personal experience. Importantly, they were advised to always incorporate organisational values into feedback to bring in an objective, mutually agreed-upon organisational principle to the discussion.
“Leading and coaching others are important responsibilities shared by many of our members,” said Nikita Bayne, Chair of the CPA Canada Barbados Chapter Advisory Council.
“Sessions like this help them excel in that aspect of their career.”
“This is the second part of our Cultivating High-Performance Leadership series,” explained Janet Treasure, Senior Vice President, External Relations and Business Development, CPA Canada.
“We hosted part one back in July, which was also led by Jeff, where he discussed effective development one-on-one meetings. This feedback session was a natural follow up and proved very popular with more than 270 CPAs from 28 countries taking part.” (PR)
