Two partners in crime faced different fates today when they were found guilty of breaking into a restaurant.
Leroy St Aubyn Harte and his girlfriend Suzette Juann Gill-Terry had denied breaking into Kingston 10, a Jamaican restaurant at Bayside Plaza, Bay Street, St Michael, sometime between October 22 and 23, 2009 and stealing $182 in drinks.
But after hearing evidence, Magistrate Douglas Frederick found the two, who are no longer in a relationship, guilty.
Harte, 53, was sentenced to six months in prison while Gill-Terry, 43, was ordered to complete a mandatory drug rehabilitation programme under the aegis of the Probation Department. If the woman does not complete the treatment, she will have to spend six months in jail.
“I want to get you into some type of treatment; not only to monitor you but to make you stronger,” the magistrate told Gill-Terry whom he also placed on a year’s probation.
“The first thing you have to do is admit you want help,” he added, as he lauded Gill-Terry for not only admitting she was wrong, but for checking herself into a drug rehabilitation programme at the Psychiatric Hospital for eight months.
The woman added that she been clean for the past three years.
“Since you seem to have a genuine desire to change, you might not need a structured environment like him [Harte],” Magistrate Frederick said.
When he addressed Harte, who had several convictions, the magistrate told him that he seemed to have a strong influence over Gill-Terry.
“How I could have influence over she Sir?” Harte questioned.
“Even though you have been found guilty, you are still hardened in your ways,” the magistrate said.
Harte is currently serving an 18-month sentence for breaking into a house.
The six-month sentenced imposed by Magistrate Frederick today will start in June, following the completion of his current sentence.
