16 injured in accident

Sixteen people were injured when a ZR van and a truck collided on Wanstead Road, St James this afternoon.

Five of them were hurt seriously and had to be taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) by ambulance for treatment, including the route taxi driver, 38-year-old Corey Chase of Tudor Bridge, St Michael, whom police public relations officer Acting Assistant Superintendent David Welch said was the most seriously injured.

“He had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Barbados Fire Service. He complained of plains about the body, especially to his right arm,” Welch told reporters on the scene of the accident which occurred around 1:40 p.m.

Chase’s conductor and 12 passengers sustained various injuries.

The driver of the truck, Laron Elliott, 34, of Clapham, Christ Church and his lone passenger both complained of pains about the body.

In addition to the five who were taken to the QEH, four were treated on the scene and the other three taken to the Winston Scott Polyclinic by Transport Board bus.

One doctor from the hospital, four ambulances, eight emergency medical technicians, nine fire officers and two fire tenders, as well as police officers responded to the accident.
