The National Sports Council could be facing a major lawsuit following the dismissal of cricket coach, Milton Small, and netball coach, Jackie Browne, in early July.
Acting Assistant General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers, Delcia Burke, is charging that the board of the NSC did not follow its disciplinary procedure in dismissing the two workers who had worked at that government agency for the past 18 years.
She pointed out that initially the Establishment Committee of the board had recommended a three month suspension for the two workers, but this decision was overturned by the board and the two workers dismissed with immediate effect. At that time the board of directors was headed by Seibert Straughn.
Burke said that two weeks ago the National Union of Public Workers met with members of staff and submitted an appeal against the decision but so far had not received a response from the NSC.
The union official pointed out that based on the provisions of the board’s disciplinary procedure, the two workers who were first offenders should not have been dismissed.
Burke maintained that the action taken against them was too harsh and in breach of the board’s disciplinary procedure. (NC)
