The National HIV/AIDS Commission has a new chairman, who is promising the Government agency’s continued active role in the fight against the deadly disease.
Chief Nursing Officer with Ministry of Health, Dr. Wendy Sealy, who is a registered general and psychiatric nurse, has replaced Dr. Nigel Taylor at the helm of the organisation’s board of directors, and a new board has been named with Marilyn Sealy as the deputy.
This was announced by the NHAC, which quoted the new chairman as saying she was pleased by the numerous approaches and empowerment tools being used to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
The official said it was encouraging to know that
all stakeholders, including ministries, agencies and community groups, at the national and community levels, were supportive of the various programmes and activities.
“The most recent innovation of the HIV mobile App “HIV Explained”, for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android devices, is one such initiative which was launched by the NHAC … and allows easy access to information on HIV. I encourage all persons to access it and offer feedback,” she said.
She noted that the recent Crop-Over Festival continued to be a highly active one for the teams at the commission, which executed weekly interventions at almost all major festival events.
“It is heartening to know that various mechanisms are in place to monitor and evaluate the impact of the work which is being done. Such approaches will auger well in assisting the NHAC to identify and analyse future sustainable programmes and activities,” she said.
Other board members are Professor Timothy Roach, Simon Alleyne, Donavan Emmanuel, Patricia Marshall, Blondelle Mullin, Petrona Holder, and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment, and Community Development or his/her nominee.
