Unfortunate, painful and distasteful.

That is how former first vice president of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Jeff Broomes has described the recent revelation that Jefferson Miller was able to get the post of CEO even though he had been convicted for grand theft in Miami earlier this year.

Declaring up front that Miller was his friend and a friend of several members of the current board, Broomes said: “I think it is unfortunate. I have always known Miller to be a good and decent person . . . . I think this has been a slap in the BCA’s face. It projects the BCA as amateurish and playing lightly with the membership and cricket in general.”

“What makes it more difficult for me to understand, apart from due diligence not having been done, is that he served his probationary period and was confirmed in the job. I think that the BCA should be accountable for his entire contract. I believe he should be paid unless he has deceived or lied to the board. I do not know if he was ever questioned in this way.”

Asked if he thought the 14-member board should resign, Broomes, who once managed a West Indies Under-19 team to England, said he would make no pronouncements but would allow the membership of the BCA to decide on the board’s future.
