Four nationals and an organization were honoured for their significant contribution to the country and the Barbados Workers’ Union at the BWU’s 73rd annual delegates conference on Saturday.
The union’s executive council presented awards to former calypso monarch John King, Wesley Haynes, Colin Small of C.S Construction, Freida Nicholls, and the Diabetes Association of Barbados.

King, a veteran calypsonian, is a staple at every BWU entertainment activity and was credited for his “fierceness and persistence in his defence of the workforce”. He was specifically honoured for “the major role he has been playing in promoting the calypso art form and or his commitment to the labour movement”.

Haynes, who is based at the Eagle Hall Post Office, was commended for his bravery and public spiritedness for rescuing the elderly Norma Best, a woman living with a disablity, and her neighbour Maude Bailey after a house fire broke out in Thomas Gap, President Kennedy Drive, St Michael, in early July.
Five homes were destroyed in the blaze, including the one where Best was living.
Colin “Duke” Small, the managing director of C.S Construction Limited was singled out for his “entrepreneurial drive and commitment to the efficient upkeep of BWU properties”.
The lone female to be honoured was Freida Nicholls, the manager of market development and public relations at the Barbados Port Inc. She has been coordinating the Port’s participation in the May Day celebrations for the past 19 years.
The award to the Diabetes Association of Barbados was for its work in improving the health of citizens.
