Weeks of harassment, threats and stalking almost ended tragically this morning when 27-year-old Margaret Christopher was viciously attacked by her former companion as she and her six-year-old son disembarked from a bus at Parris Hill, St Joseph.

Christopher, a resident of Halls Road, St Michael is this evening in serious but stable condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) after being slashed across her throat and from ear to mouth. Her attacker also remains at the QEH, under police guard, after cutting his wrists.

In an interview with Barbados TODAY, Christopher’s 39-year-old sister Velma Phillips said she was shaken by the attack.

“As far as I know they are no longer in a relationship. He has been calling me and threatening to cut up my sister and kill her.

“I listened to his threats but never took them seriously,” said the Pioneer Road, Bush Hall, St Michael resident.

“She complained to the police and the police asked her if she wanted them to arrest him. [But] she asked them to warn him. He would go by her house and knock on the house and make himself a nuisance.”

Phillips, who is hypertensive, said that as her sister got off the bus around 7:15 a.m. to head to a village shop where she worked, the man emerged from behind a bus stop and attacked her in full view of their son.

“My sister tried to defend herself but he was too strong for her. A lady who was near the bus stop tried to assist my sister but even with her assistance they could not keep him off,” she said.

Phillips said her sister was expected to undergo surgery today.

She said doctors had told the family that they believed Christopher would pull through even though her injuries were serious.
