Police are yet to reveal the identity of a Christ Church man, said to be in his early 20s, who received a gunshot injury while he was taking part in Grand Kadooment yesterday.

The man is said to be recovering after undergoing surgery for a wound to his stomach.

The incident marred what police report was generally an incident free day.

Police Public Relations Officer Inspector David Welch told Barbados TODAY, there were also a few skirmishes on the road but the Force was satisfied they had dealt with each case appropriately.

“There was a report of a woman being wounded in the head by a bottle in the area of Gooding Road [Station Hill].  Medical and police personnel were dispatched but no one was seen, not that it didn’t happen, just that no one came forward.

“Then we had the shooting. Close to that same area, we had the Roberts’ band disbanded.  We made the decision because there were several skirmishes in the band and we were concerned about the safety of other persons, so that was terminated in the Bank Hall/ Eagle Hall area.”

Welch noted that the police had deployed a significant number of resources to man the day’s events even as he maintained that the island was fully covered.

“We employed a significant amount of resources from the police but although this was the case, it did not detract from or minimize our policing plan for Barbados. Our normal policing plan continued and this is testimony to the fact that our call for services were very minimal,” Welch added.
