The union representing primary school teachers here will be pushing to ensure security of tenure for its members during the coming year.

President of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) Sean Spencer said that issue will be one of its priorities when the new year is ushered in.

“Security of tenure, whereby those who are not appointed would receive their instruments and those who have received their notification letters would receive their confirmation letters,” Spencer told Barbados TODAY.

The BUT leader said demands for better physical working conditions and other industrial relations grievances are high on its agenda for talks with the new administration.

“We are still concerned about safety in schools as well, given the absence of certain facilities,” he said, adding that student on teacher and teacher on student violence remains a major worry for the BUT.

“That is a matter which we have always spoken out against, because we do believe that it is a reflection of society and as it stands today, as a social institution, that being the schools, we will continue to play our role in ensuring that the public is not going to have to deal with those circumstances,” the union leader insisted.

Spencer explained that teachers try to impress on their students the need for them to be more respectful all-round citizens with regard to observing authority figures and the laws of the land.
