Scores of firearms were destroyed at Central Police Station today.
This morning, members of the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) started the process of destroying a number of firearms and ammunition.
Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Michael Blackman, told members of the media the guns and ammunition destroyed were either seized, found, or cases that already passed through the court system.
"These firearms vary in make, size, model and caliber. Environmental factors have been taken into consideration and we believe that the process has little or no impact on the environment," he said.
Sergeant Blackman reminded that the RBPF adheres to the protocol against illicit manufacturing, and trafficking of firearms, parts, components, and ammunition supplementing the United  Nations Conventions Against Transnationals Organized Crime, which require associated states to adopt measures within their domestic legal system to prevent illegal firearms from falling into the hands of unauthorized persons by seizing and destroying such weapons.
"Destruction shall be the preferred method of disposal of small arms and weapons that have been relinquished as part of a weapons collection programme, recovered in crime, otherwise designated as illicit, or identified as being surplus to the requirements of the armed services of the state," he said.
The weapons were destroyed by a specialized machine.
Sergeant Blackman said he would be releasing information on the exact number of firearms destroyed when the process is complete. (AH)
