Vehicle owners whose road tax is due before July 1 are being told to pay up or park their vehicles until the start of next month.
With road tax due to be abolished effective July 1 and replaced by a levy on petrol, Minister of Transport and Works Dr William Duguid said some people may be tempted to avoid paying the road tax, even if it is due before the new measure comes into effect.
However, speaking during a tour of the White Hill, St Andrew district this morning, Duguid said motorists are legally bound to pay road tax or they could find themselves in trouble with the law.
“You still have to pay. Obviously, if your road tax is due July 1, then no, because that is when the new matter comes into effect,” Duguid advised.
“The law states that you have to pay road tax. That change will come July 1. If your road tax is due June 28 and you do not pay your road tax I will suggest you put down your car for the two days. If the police holds you, you will be found to be without your road tax for two days,” he said.
In keeping an election campaign promise, Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced last week in her so-called mini Budget that Barbadians would no longer have to pay a tax to legally drive their vehicles on the island’s roads.
Instead, Government will introduce a new levy of 40 cents per lite on diesel and gasoline and five cents per litre on kerosene.
