An overflowing garbage skip along Cheapside, St Michael has one concerned Barbadian raising a stink.
The woman, who requested anonymity, pointed out to Barbados TODAY that the skip, which is a constant source of bother for her, was not only located close to a vendors’ market which she frequents, but also directly adjacent to a daycare nursery, posing a health threat to the children in particular.
She complained that the problem has been recurring at the back of Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN) market for months now, but said the final straw for her came two Saturday’s ago when she saw “rotten animal intestines” scattered all around the dumpster.
“Everybody had to be running and holding their nostrils and running away from the site,” she said.
Terming the situation as nothing short of deplorable, she told Barbados TODAY she was at her wits end since all attempts by her to get the authorities to take action to remedy the situation had so far proved futile.
“I tried calling the Ministry of Health and they told me to call the Black Rock Polyclinic and I got no answer. I have tried to get on the call-in programme and I cannot get through,” she said, while suggesting that at the very least the skip should be moved to the other side of the street, downwind of the day nursery.
The woman reported that she had also spoken to the BARVEN President Allister Alexander about her concern but was told that though they were aware, there was little they could do but request that the skip be cleared more often.
Attempts by Barbados TODAY to get a comment today from health officials at the Black Rock Polyclinic on the situation were unsuccessful.
