Four days of intense competition culminated this week with Samantha Yearwood of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic being declared the Best Of The Competition at the World Skills Barbados 2014.
World Skills International has a long history of more than 60 years. This competition, which started in Barbados two years ago, has come to signify the high point of excellence in vocational training. Competitors would have perfected their skills in the areas of automotive technology, beauty therapy, culinary arts, garment making and ladies’ and men’s hairdressing.
Yearwood was among 25 other contestants when, at the closing ceremony held at the SJPP campus in The Pine, St Michael, she was also declared the Most Outstanding representative from SJPP and won first place in the garment making category.
Placing second in garment making was Alana Grant and third Kelsey Lunn, both of the SJPP. Other big winners were Adisia Sergeant who was declared the most outstanding representative from the Barbados Vocational Training Board, as well as winner of beauty therapy. Second place in this category went to Lashea Skeete from the SJPP and third place was Ebony Brathwaite–Chen also from SJPP.
The most outstanding person from the Barbados Community College was Jevon Johnson. He also placed second in culinary arts behind Omari Lamming of the BVTB. Third was Jamaar Marshall of BCC.

In the category of automotive technology, the winner was Darius Shepherd form the SJPP, while his colleagues Timothy Johnson and Jonathan Medford were second and third respectively.
The winner of ladies and men’s hairdressing was Tahira Hurdle of SJPP, while Jessica Wiloughby, who was adjudged most outstanding student from Semaj International School of Cosmetology and Tricology was second and Rukiya Clarke also of SISCT – third.
World Skills Barbados Competition 2014 began on March 11 under the theme Shaping A World-Class Workforce Through Innovation, Creativity And Skill Development.
